Other Programs

Now We Can Sing
“Now We Can Sing” is a moving and inspiring musical event centering on music that was banned to Jewish musicians by the Nazis in 1930’s Germany. It follows these musical artists through that dreadful era as they ultimately migrate to a new land and establish new lives. Flutist Barbara Siesel and singer, songwriter and storyteller Keith Torgan, create the times through the music of Bach, Schumann, Hindemith, Copland, and Gershwin as well as through the cabaret songs of Frederick Hollaender. In this universal work, mastery, passion and self expression transcend the isolation of hatred, racism and intolerance.

Workshops & Masterclasses

My Story, My Song: a workshop in creativity through songwriting
Everybody loves songs but most people have never made one up themselves. Songwriting can be as natural as breathing … or humming – and since we all have plenty to talk about – or should we say sing about – this is a no-brainer! In this workshop we learn about the basics of song form and improvising melodies but more importantly we discover all kinds of exciting ways to access our creative impulses and turn them into song! Free-writing exercises, group collaborations, guided meditations and sensory exercises are all part of this inspiring and delightful workshop. Why is it called “My Story, My Song”? – Because it’s the things in our life – the experiences that are central to our everyday existence, that fuel the creative process and serve as the centerpiece to this inspiring experience in personal creativity.
Grades 4 – 12

Instrumental Master Classes with Professor Siesel
Juilliard graduate and educator, Barbara Siesel, will work with students of wind instruments on both technique and repertoire. Students will learn tone production, breathing, hand and body position, etc., all in relation to music they are working on. She will specifically work with the students on their school music and how to play well in section, concentrating on intonation, blending, practicing and more. Advanced students can bring the solo music they are studying for statewide competitions, auditions and private lessons.

What educators are saying about Green Golly

“As a teacher I’ve heard every trick in the book to help students become better readers.  But, what we so often miss is feeding the imagination. That is what Green Golly does.”
– Emily Schweer, District Teacher of the Year, East Hanover, NJ

“Thank you for providing us with an amazing performance. Our students were doubled over with laughter. It is hard to keep their attention for one full hour, but somehow The Green Golly Project did!  I hope that we will see them again next school year. “
– Janet Heiman, Principal, Chicago International Charter School

“Green Golly has become an instant folk hero at our school.”
– Don Castellow, Instrumental and Band teacher, PS/MS 29 Bronx, NY

“In my 12 plus years of work with important organizations in Chicago, bringing classical performances to underserved elementary schools lacking music programs, it is rare to see children as attentive, engaged and joyful as I have witnessed them during the many performances of The Green Golly Project. Keith and Barbara provide the students with a well rounded and excellent performing arts experience – one that students will most likely remember for the rest of their lives.”
– Luciano Pedota, Ravinia – Reach, Teach and Play, Summer Home of the Chicago Symphony

“Torgan and Siesel are outstanding! True professionals … they not only graced the stage with an interactive, dynamic, and unique program they presented themselves and supported our reading initiative with enthusiasm through the arts. Anyone interested in engaging and educating children and adults through original music and storytelling should definitely book a performance with The Green Golly Project.”
– Stephen Foresi, Principal, Paterson Elementary School, Newington, CT
